How to Tell if Your Brakes Need Repair

Don’t wait until you are already having difficulties stopping to get your brakes repaired. Instead, be on the lookout for initial indications that your brakes may need to be serviced. These indications include:

  • Squealing or grinding noises when you apply the brakes.
  • A soft, spongy feeling when you press down on the brake pedal.
  • The vehicle vibrates when the brakes are applied.
  • The vehicle drifts to one side when the brakes are applied.
  • A red light on the brake dashboard indicates that there is a system imbalance.
  • A yellow light on the brake dashboard indicates that there is an issue with your Anti-lock Brake System (ABS).
  • Having to press down hard on the brake in order to bring the vehicle to a stop.

If you are noticing any of these things while driving your Nissan, we encourage you to bring your vehicle in to our Monroe Nissan Service Center for inspection and repair as soon as possible. Driving with damaged brakes is not only dangerous, it also risks damaging them further, leading to even more costly repairs. By having your brakes repaired as soon as you begin to notice any signs of trouble, though, you can avoid potentially costly (and dangerous) outcomes.

The Three Components of Car Brakes & Common Issues

Brake Pads
The friction from the brake pads being pressed against the brake disks is what brings your car to a stop. Brake pads are made up of a high-friction material with a steel backing. However, the friction material can become worn over time and needs to be replaced periodically to ensure that the steel backing never comes in contact with the brake disk.
Brake Discs(Rotors)
Brake disks don’t wear out nearly as often as brake pads, however, they too must be replaced from time to time. Signs that your brake disks may need to be replaced include having to press down hard on the brake pedal to bring the vehicle to a stop or vibrations when the brakes are applied.
Brake Fluid
You should always change your brake fluid according to the schedule recommended by the vehicle’s manufacturer, the reason being that both solid particles and water droplets can gather in your brake fluid over time if it is not periodically replaced. This could result in both wear and tear on your vehicle as well as longer stopping distances.
